Coaching is inherently emotional, and the intensity increases when coaching one’s own children.
For Hanover Central head coach Tony Bonalerto, this season marks a change as he experiences coaching without the added layer of having his sons on the team. “It’s a lot easier,” he said. “There are a lot of emotions in football, and when your sons are involved, you have the emotions of a father and a coach. Without them, I feel recharged and refreshed.” Bonalerto spent four years as Hanover’s quarterbacks coach while his sons played in the program. He says stepping into the head role now feels like a fresh start.
Bonalerto expressed gratitude for his new position. “I’ve been blessed to get this opportunity,” he said. “I’m giving these kids every ounce of energy I have. We’re having fun, and I think we’re off to a good start with our spring and summer.”
With his focus fully on his team, Bonalerto says he’s energized for the challenge of leading Hanover into its third season in the Northwest Crossroads Conference (NCC). “This is a great place to be,” Bonalerto said. “The kids work hard, and I couldn’t ask for a better community to coach in.”
