The Hanover Central girls volleyball team narrowly escaped with a 2‑1 victory over Portage on Saturday, marking the first win for the Wildcats on Portage’s home court since October 2, 2019. The victory not only avenged a loss from September 2024 but also reinforced Hanover Central’s resilience and ability to perform in challenging environments.
Nora Edgerton led Hanover Central’s offense with ten kills, showcasing her power and consistency at the net. Setter Gabi Esparza contributed 12 assists, orchestrating the Wildcats’ attack, and added four aces to lead the team from the service line. The combination of strong serving, smart distribution, and clutch play under pressure allowed Hanover Central to overcome a tough Portage squad.
The win improved Hanover Central’s record to 3‑2, while Portage dropped to 2‑3 on a three-game losing streak. The Wildcats demonstrated composure in crucial moments, taking the match despite a fiercely competitive second set and demonstrating the depth and talent of the roster.
Hanover Central returned to the court quickly, following up with a 2‑0 win over Merrillville on August 23.
